Boycott of Settlement Products – It’s in Your Hands The cycle of violence and the current war have a single goal: to defend the settlements and prolong the occupation. In light of the escalating bloodshed, Bat Shalom calls on women everywhere to take an active role against the occupation by joining us to boycott settlement products. Not all settlements were founded on ideological grounds. Some were established for economic reasons, or by people seeking a better quality of life. But each and every settlement was established with the government’s encouragement and blessing, to perpetuate the occupation and to prevent the return of the lands to the Palestinian people. At a time when many Israelis are feeling the economic costs of the occupation, the government of Israel continues to reward the settlements with economic exemptions and other wide-ranging benefits. We believe that women can lead the fight against the occupation and against the war. We have the power to express our opposition by engaging in non-violent protest. Some of us oppose animal testing by refusing to buy cosmetics. Others refrain from purchasing products manufactured by mega-corporations. And we’ve decided to stop buying settlement products: • Because a boycott is a powerful tool and a democratic form of resistance to the occupation. • Because a boycott expresses both individual and group opposition to the present situation. • Because we women have the right and the liberty to choose what we will buy and how we will spend our money. • Because a boycott is a simple, sustainable form of active resistance. • Because the settlements are fundamental to the occupation • And because we feel responsible for the situation and believe we have the power to change it, by bringing about an end to the occupation and achieving a peace between equals, based on a return to the borders of June 4, 1967.
