Well over 100 people staged an angry picket outside of the Israeli embassy in Wellington for 2 hours in the pouring rain. The protest called for the immediate expulsion of the newly appointed Israeli ambassador, the closure of the embassy, an end to the blockade and siege of Gaza and a condemnation of the acts of the Israeli state by NZ.

There was a great cross section of Wellington people there from the University Muslim Students Association, Workers Party, anarchists and greens. Outspoken supporter of the Palestinians, Green MP Keith Locke talked briefly as did Wellington Palestine Group spokesperson Don Carson, and Students for Justice in Palestine.

One speaker linked all of the actions of state’s together, noting the foundation of the state on violence. She spoke of New Zealand’s long term involvement in the occupation of Afghanistan and the occupation of Maori lands by a violent settler government. She said her hope was not for a one-state solution, but a no-state solution for all of the world’s people.

The protest was heavily policed with officers blockading the doors to the embassy, photographing and profiling people from across the road.

The protest was also attended by at least 4 zionists who held the Israeli flag and justified the murder of innocent people.

There is another protest march planned in Wellington on Saturday at 12 noon at the bucket fountain.
