News from Barcelona by Yair 3:57pm Mon Oct 14 '02 October 12 manifestation, CNT and Can Masdeu Hello from Barcelona. On October 12 (Columbus Day, day of the "discovery" of America), a big manifestation took place in the center of Barcelona. The day is considered as the day of Hispanity (ie loyalty to Spain throughout the Spanish-speaking world). The manifestation started at Uquinaona square, and proceeded through Sant Pere street, where big police forces stopped the people manifesting against fascism and national unity. Police shot rubber bullets at the crowd, and about 30 activists were arrested, but later released. Activities and squats have come to such dimensions, that both the activiests and the police take things very seriously. More BCN events: 1. The teachers' section of libertarian syndicate CNT (http://cnt.es) are now preparing a struggle against a new law trying to further separate low- and high-achievers at school, dooming them to take technical courses rather than choose the subjects they wish to practice. I'll sent more on that as action proceeds. 2. After a serious police depicted in local press as Ramallah-like actions, the rural squat of Can Masdeu (http://canmasdeu.org), at the outskirts of BCN, is still active. About 20 people live there, and many more visitors drop by. They try to be as autonomous as possible, each one of them paying 1 euro (4.5 NIS) a day for food. The long abandoned lot has excellent conditions for growing peas, onion, tomatoes and other vegetables, and now the soil is being prepared for the fall. Dash to everybody, Yair.
