On Friday, June 7th, as the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories entered its 36th year, Ta'ayush and the Prisoners' Friends' association in Israel held a demonstration at the gates of the Ansaar detention camp, the recently reopened epitome of oppression of the first intifada. We brought basic supplies for the detainees, and the delegation of lawyers accompanying us entered to the prison.
Last weekend saw another mass arrest in the Palestinian territories. All the male residents of the Balata refugee camp aged between 15 and 45 were ordered to turn themselves in. Once again we wittnessed hundreds of blindfolded, handcuffed men and boys being taken into custody, facing one charge alone: That of being Palestinian. Though many have been released in the meantime, the fact of the arbitrary arrest cannot be undone, nor justified. The following week brought another bloody bombing in israel, reminding us of just how much "security" Israelis can expect to gain from these acts of injustice.
Hundreds are being held at Ansaar, Ofer and Megido. many among them are held in administrative detention, not knowing what the suspicions against them are, and without so much as a trial to wait for. The Israeli courts and press are turning a deaf ear to the appeals of human rights organizations, and the plight of the detainees is kept out of the public's sight and mind. Under cover of its "western" and "enlightened" image, Israel commits heinous acts.
We, Arabs and Jews, protested the arbitrary arrests, and the 35 years of occupation
