If you really are who you say you are, if you really have experienced what you say you have experienced then I thank you. The information available to me has either come from white-washed sources or from the bigoted and raving right-wing and left-wing of the U.S. How can I ever have anything but disrespect for hate-mongers and delighted bigots with an excuse to want to destroy Jews? What you are saying makes more sense. I live in America. I have known young men with the kind of attitudes you describe the Israeli soldiers demonstrating. Here, it's blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, Orientals -- etc. There seems to be a certain percentage of any people who have a tendency to be bullies. Give every person in the community a gun and give them the power to vent their hostilities and these types will be horrific. In the U.S. there isn't really a lot of support for such behavior, though it still happens. In Israel where, as a friend of mine put it, "It's 9/11 every day.", there obviously is not a very powerful brake to such impulses. I grieve for that. I grieve for the Israelis, I grieve for the Palestinians. I wish there was a way to make a change. I have tried to imagine what would bring about a mutual healing. I am too far away, too unwilling to trust the activists here in the U.S. who have convinced me they are simply bigots and not for Peace at all. |
