The full essay is very persuasive. I haven't seen the film (and of course am unlikely to, especially after reading the synopsis), but did observe some of its marketing (in Ireland, perhaps symptomatic of global patterns). In a popular magazine in which full-page ads for "Signs" were placed, "happened" to be an article about crop circles, in which some supposed expert was commenting on alleged studies of the damaged stalks, holding up samples, etc., and accompanied by what purported to be aerial photos of the patterns in the crops, which however were not captioned. A gullible friend of mine not only took the article at face value, but saw a "cosmic" significance in the coincidence of its appearance at the time when the movie was coming out... you know, like, SYNCHRONICITY! When I put it to her that it was standard marketing, she dismissed me as an old grouch. |
