This is an added practicle view to the recently signed off Geneva Understanding by Bailin and gang...
print article

For a long time already the majority of Israelis (about 75% by the last year’s poles) were/are supporting the peace process (any peace process) and that was based on Camp David’s Barak initiative and Taba’s gathering.

In that respect nothing is new here, the Geneva Understanding (it is not “accord” and it is not an “Agreement”) is not bringing anything significant news to the table.

Yet it is bringing some negative enhancements…

….”The Bailin’s compromise of the Israeli democracy and its laws”.

This agreement is conducted by a tricky politician to revive his political failed past and future by taking initiatives that already cooked ahead of him by Israel’s former Prime Minister Barak, changing it a bit and presenting it as his own.

He (they) were crafting the understandings like a thieves in the night, deliberately avoiding any public debate while claiming that all they were doing is for this public benefits while actually were acting as private citizens for the benefit of a few self-served private citizens…

In addition the Geneva initiative’s financing by the European Union is smelly to say the list and unlawful as it is seems to be. It is bordering (and it is being challenged now in the Israeli court of Law) in a direct, rude intervention of the EU in the internal affairs of a sovereign country - Israel.

If we are to listen to some twist-minded European leaders and newspapers that are questioning the very existence of the state of Israel then this intervention is taking a new dimension.

Worse…We all remember the Oslo agreement and its sounding failure. It is hard to forget that the same Bailin was a key figure in the Oslo agreement’s crafting.
One should expect that the reasons Oslo agreement failed will teach the crafter some lesson and lead him for avoiding the same mistakes…Not at all, not a bit!

It seems that Bailin never learn anything nor forgot nothing. The same mistakes are popping up in these Geneva Understandings.

Oslo agreement failed primarily due to the lack of proper inspection on its performance as well as lacking of penalties measures in case the agreement was breached.
Amazingly nothing of those measures installed in the Geneva Understanding.

I am talking about the facts, I have no explanation as of why it was done that way avoiding the insertion those measures, doing so, to any agreement, is expected, obvious and is not suppose to compromise the very foundations of those Understanding or any other agreement.
I hope nobody is seriously considering international guarantees to the final peace agreement as proper measures, we have had of those many times and as much they failed.

I am not trumpeting here opposition to the very basic of this initiative namely a serious dialog between Israeli and Palestinians trying to understand each other wishes and finding the golden path to the conflict that may resolve it. To the contrary, I am supporting any such dialog warmly.

Nevertheless, this dialog must be done in the frame of the Israeli democracy boundaries and allow the elected Israeli government to act on such initiative in the proper way.

As it was done, the Geneva Understanding is trying to dictate a term and conditions to the elected Israeli government. Though the Israeli government is ignoring the Understandings, the damage is already done, clear and present.

Geneva Understandings is not passing the test of complete honest and fair intentions.

As I was expressing my feeling about this man Bailin to my surroundings… “I would never buy a used car from this man”….

On the other hand I would like to praise the Ailon-Nusaiba understanding as an example of a proper way of conducting such a dialog by private citizens without compromising the dearest principles of Israel and the PA.

If I have to choose between the two, though they are very similar, I would elect towards the ‘Ailon-Nusaiba’ understandings much ahead of those Geneva’s.

That is the exact rout I am recommending the Israeli government to take ahead.
