2nd Prison Term for Conscientious Objector Ajuad Zidan

CO Ajuad Zidan, 18, from the town of Beit Jann, a Palestinian member of the Druze religious community, was sentenced to 20 days of imprisonment on 14 Dec for his refusal to enlist in the Israeli military. This is his second term in prison (he was earlier sentenced to 10 days in prison on 30 Nov., although he was released a few days early following the evacuation of Military Prison no. 6 during the fire on Mt. Carmel earlier this month). He is currently held in Military Prison no. 4.

The testimonies leave no room for doubt: while it is true that the Israeli security apparatus has had to deal with concrete threats in the past decade, including terrorist attacks on Israeli citizens, Israeli operations are not solely defensive. Rather, they systematically lead to the de facto annexation of large sections of the West Bank to Israel through the dispossession of Palestinian residents. The widespread notion in Israeli society that the control of the Territories is intended exclusively to protect the security of Israeli citizens is incompatible with the information conveyed by hundreds of IDF soldiers.

On Human Rights Day

A year ago, Abdullah Abu Rahmah, of Bil'in's Popular Committee Against the Wall and Settlements was arrested by Israeli soldiers who raided his home in the middle of the night. A year later he is still in prison. From there he sends the following message.

את התערוכה “תצלומים שלא צולמו” שאצרה אריאלה אזולאי בגלריה "זוכרות", ניתן לנתח דרך פריזמות שונות, ובעיקר דרך שאלות על תיעוד, היסטוריה ופעולה פוליטית. אך במקביל לשאלות שהיא מעלה, “תצלומים שלא צולמו” היא קודם כל דוגמא לחשיבה אוצרתית רדיקלית שמרחיבה את גבולות השיח האמנותי ונדירה כל כך בשדה האמנות המקומי.

My Father Will Be Free

On 12 January 2010 my father Ibrahim was arrested by the Israeli army and sentenced to two years in prison for organizing and participating in nonviolent protests against the Israel’s wall in the occupied West Bank. Read more about Ibrahim's story, here's more about the upcoming release:

Dear friends, I want to send you a big thank you from the depth of my heart. Your contributions that are meant to free my father Ibrahim, as well as Hassan Mousa and Zaydoon Srour have reached me in Ni’lin. With your generous help I was able to pay the fines necessary to liberate the leaders of our Ni’lin Committee Against The Wall. My father, as well as the other two will be free this Sunday. All of this was only possible because you helped me to free them.

בסביבות השעה 8:00 הגיעו כוחות משטרה לשכונת פארוק בג’בל מוכאבר והחלו בפינוי בני משפחת קרעאין מביתם. מדובר בבנין בן 3 קומות שחיו בו כ-15 איש מהם 7 ילדים. יחד עם השוטרים הגיעו גם קבוצת אזרחים, ככל הנראה מאבטחים, שעם הוצאת החפצים והריהוט של המשפחה מהבית פלשו פנימה והחלו בעבודות שיפוץ שכללו הקמת גדרות מסביב לבית. במקום זוהו אנשים המוכרים לפלסטינים מסילוואן כקשורים לאבטחה של עמותת הימין הקיצוני אלע”ד.

אטיאס נגד מצוקת הדיור: עיר ל-150,000 חרדים, אבל לא לחילונים וערבים. שר השיכון החליט על הקמתה של עיר לחרדים בלבד בחריש, תוך הרס חסר תקנה של אלפי דונמים של שמורת יער ייחודית, גירוש בפועל של כלל המשפחות החיות כיום בישוב חריש, והפקעת קרקעות חקלאיות וקרקעות פרטיות של קיבוצים ויישובים ערביים בסביבה. והכל בדורסנות וחוסר שקיפות ציבורית. אנחנו, יהודים וערבים, חילונים ודתיים, קיבוצניקים ותושבי יישובי האיזור, דורשים: עיר פתוחה לכולם!
