If the Hebrews were made up of a coalition of Canaanite tribes (and we have evidence to conclude that sections of the former power elite aligned with the Hebrews), than they are part of the indigenous network of Canaanite tribal affiliations from beginning to end. They were part of the local population. The sacred contract is merely an externalization of their generational tie to the land as a religiously binding pact.
