RAMALLAH: Israel has arrested Marwan Barghouti, a close aide to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and a top leader of the Palestinian uprising. Israeli and Palestinian sources say Barghouti was detained in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Israeli troops have reportedly been searching for him since Israel launched its West Bank assault more than two weeks ago.

Barghouti is the chief of Arafat's Fatah movement in the West Bank. Israel accuses him of leading the Fatah military wing.

The news of his arrest were first reported by the Israeli radio. Palestinian officials who strongly condemned the arrest expect that it would inspire more Palestinian resistance due to the respect the man has among all Palestinian factions and in the Palestinian street.

Meanwhile, a group of international relief workers, including Palestinian medics, is getting its first look inside the devastated Palestinian refugee camp at Jenin. International Red Cross and Red Crescent workers with ambulances, escorted by Israeli troops, are searching for bodies and giving medical aid to the wounded.

Israel is accused of carrying out a massacre in the camp, saying hundreds of people, including many civilians, have been killed.
